News release

Jan. 6, 2021, St Albert RCMP responded to a complainant of a suspicious occurrence at a local car dealership. The dealership believed a male was attempting to finance a vehicle with fraudulent identification. The investigation revealed the suspicious male was in fact using a fraudulent identification and had arrived to purchase the new vehicle in a stolen vehicle. A female passenger was also located inside the stolen vehicle. A search of the stolen vehicle located further stolen and fraudulent identification documents.

As a result of the investigation a 34-year-old male and a 33-year-old female, both of Edmonton, have been charged with:

  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
  • Fraud
  • Possession of Fraudulent Documents

Both individuals were released by a Justice of the Peace to attend court in Feb. 2021.

St Albert RCMP Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) was notified of the incident and launched a subsequent investigation. The St. Albert CRU investigation lead to a search warrant being executed at a residence in Edmonton on Jan. 11, 2021.

The search warrant located hundreds of fraudulent identity documents, stolen identification, stolen government cheques, and prohibited weapons. As a result of the search warrant the 34-year-old male was again charged with:

  • Possession of Stolen Property
  • Possession of Fraudulent Documents
  • Possession of Prohibited Devices
  • Failure to Comply with release Documents

He was brought before a Justice of the Peace, ordered to be held in police custody and will appear in St. Albert Provincial Court on Feb. 8, 2021.

The investigation showed that many of the stolen identification was obtained from unlocked motor vehicles. The St Albert RCMP would like to remind citizens to follow #9PMRoutine. By removing all valuables and locking vehicles at night helps reduces the risk of theft and potential identity fraud.
