St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador

News release

On December 11, RCMP NL received a complaint from Joe Smyth alleging political interference by the former Minister of Justice and Public Safety and current Attorney General with respect to a previous charge of obstruction of justice against Smyth that was eventually dismissed by the court.

At the request of RCMP NL, and in the interest of an independent investigation and transparent process, the investigation of the complaint will be led by the RCMP in Nova Scotia, which is currently reviewing the complaint to determine investigative steps. The leadership of the investigation and all investigative decisions rest with RCMP Nova Scotia. Police officers from RCMP NL may be tasked to support the investigation, as needed.

No further comment by either RCMP NL or RCMP NS will be provided while the investigation is underway.
