Hopedale, Newfoundland and Labrador

News release

Three teenagers are home safe and sound thanks to efforts made by Hopedale Grounds Search and Rescue (GSAR) and the use of a SPOT device on February 15, 2021.

At approximately 6:00 p.m., Hopedale RCMP received a report of the missing teens who were carrying a SPOT device which showed their current location in Shitluak, an area near Salt Pond. Police activated GSAR who attended the area by snowmobile and located the missing trio, who experienced a mechanical issue with the snowmobile.

A SPOT device uses satellite or text messaging with GPS technology and is a very useful tool if a person finds themselves displaced or in need of help. These devices are available for lend using a sign-out system at many RCMP detachments in the province. Currently, contactless pickup at the detachment can be arranged over the phone.

RCMP NL thanks Hopedale Ground Search and Rescue for their assistance and commends the teenagers for their wise choice in carrying a SPOT device.
