Karl Maheux, 47 years old, of Ancienne-Lorette, was arrested Friday by officers of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police following an investigation into the importation of a prohibited firearm device.

Our officers executed a search warrant of Maheux's residence after CBSA intercepted a package addressed to him. The package contained a silencer designed to muffle the sound of a firearm. At the scene, our officers discovered approximately 10 homemade bombs, along with a reactive substance and several chemicals including potassium nitrate. Also seized in the residence, were firearms of various calibers, silencers, magazines, as well as a very large quantity of ammunition and prohibited weapons, including weapons similar to brass knuckles. The collaboration of explosives experts from the Sûreté du Québec, the Service de police de la Ville de Québec and the Service de protection contre l'incendie de Québec (SPCIQ) was required to ensure public safety. Several residences had to be evacuated due to the risk of explosion from the substances found on scene.

Court appearance

Karl Maheux appeared yesterday by videoconference and was subsequently released with certain conditions. He will appear at the Québec City courthouse on March 19, 2021, where he will answer to the following charges: possession of prohibited devices without a licence and careless storage of a restricted weapon. As the evidence is still being analyzed, additional charges may be laid.
