Man charged with possession of child pornography

An investigation by the New Brunswick RCMP's Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit has led to a charge against a 37-year-old man from Smiths Creek, N.B.

The investigation into images of child sexual abuse began in February 2020. On May 4, 2020, a search warrant was executed at a home in Smiths Creek, a community a few kilometres north of Sussex, N.B. Police seized several electronic devices and a 37-year-old man was arrested at the scene. He was released from custody with several conditions and given an undertaking to appear in court at a later date.

On July 31, 2020, Ryan Jamie Whitfield Balzer was charged with possession of child pornography. He is scheduled to appear in Saint John Provincial Court on October 7.

The RCMP's Digital Forensic Services Unit, along with members from the Southeast District RCMP, and the RCMP National Child Exploitation Crime Centre assisted with the investigation.

The New Brunswick RCMP's Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit includes members from the Saint John Police Force and the Kennebecasis Regional Police Force.
