Halifax District RCMP is reminding motorists to drive with extra care this winter. Significant amounts of snow throughout the municipality and high snowbanks are continuing to cause visibility issues.

"Having a vehicle suddenly pull out in front of you when they can't see behind a snowbank can lead to a dangerous situation," says Cpl. Dal Hutchinson, Halifax District RCMP. "You may hit the vehicle or swerve and hit another car or a pedestrian."

When the weather is bad, motorists are asked to be cautious on all roads, including in and around parking lots as there can be increased traffic. It's always a good idea to check the road conditions before leaving the house. In Nova Scotia, motorists can call 511 for a list of current road conditions, or they can find them online at http://511.gov.ns.ca/en/. If you have to be on the roads, ensure your headlights are on, and be sure to clear any snow and ice from your vehicle as this could blow off and create hazardous conditions for other drivers.

When visibility is reduced, it's best to proceed slowly and carefully, checking for oncoming traffic and pedestrians.
