April 11, 2017
Elmwood, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia

News release

Just before 1:00 p.m. on April 7, Lunenburg District RCMP was called to a weapons complaint at a residence on Elmwood Rd. A woman called the RCMP and told a man was threatening violence and would not let her leave the residence. The man discharged the firearm while police were enroute to the scene. RCMP officers attended the area, set up containment, and established communication with the man. The man was located outside, while the woman was still in the home. At one point, the man pointed the gun at police.

The RCMP Emergency Response Team and Police Dog Services were called to provide assistance. While they were enroute, officers on scene negotiated with the man which resulted in the man surrendering himself to police. He was arrested, assessed by EHS and later remanded into custody. Police seized a loaded shotgun and ammunition. No one was hurt during the incident.

The 47-year-old Elmwood man is facing charges of Careless Use of a Firearm, Pointing a Firearm, Forcible Confinement, Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose, Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm, and Careless Use of a Firearm. He is appearing later today in Lunenburg Provincial Court.

The investigation is ongoing.
